What does a mermaid, lifeguard, and breakfast all have in common? Well it’s how my love story with Brian started.

So here’s how it began. I was in a sorority and he was in a fraternity. Cliche I know! But it’s how it went.

Brian and I both attended CSULB and my sophomore year I was living in the sorority house. Every October we put on a flag football competition to raise money for Alzheimer’s. Each sorority member was split into teams based off the different fraternities. Now I wasn’t on Brian’s team, but with a little luck and fate we still met each other. See there was another sorority putting on an event the same day. Brian was supposed to go to the other sorority’s event, but he accidentally mixed up the events and showed up to ours. Two girls at the house were on Brian’s team and decided they wanted to cook breakfast for the guys to pump them up before the game. As I walked into the kitchen to pour my cereal (ya know broke lazy college student) I saw a group of 10 guys sitting around the table eating breakfast. I was minding my own business, but I kept hearing this guy talk about fishing. Now I hated fish (don’t worry that’s changed), but for some reason I was drawn to what he was saying and kept glancing over his way. I probably mumbled a few words to him and then ate my breakfast and headed to the event.

Once I was at the event I was just drawn to him in some way. We weren’t near each other, but we kept glancing over at one another. I thought he was cute, but kind of just shrugged it off, as I was in a “I don’t want to date anyone, I want to be independent” state of mind. (Ladies you know that stage lol)

Later that night my friends and I decided to go to a Halloween party at, you guessed it, his fraternity house. I didn’t really think much about it, but there was a slight hope that I would run into him.

Since it was a Halloween party I was dressed as a mermaid and Brian was a lifeguard. It just so happens that I was DD for the night and if anyone knows frat parties, the sober ones kind of tend to gravitate towards one another. Brian happened to be the DD as well so once again the universe was working in mysterious ways. After awhile at the party Brian came up to me, smiled, and said “Let’s take a picture. I’m a lifeguard so I can pretend I’m saving your life.” In my head I did a huge eye roll and thought “You know mermaids can breathe underwater right?”, but instead I smiled, awkwardly laughed and said sure! Now normally this is the moment I would show you the picture, but believe it or not that picture is nowhere to be found. For years I have searched on old phones, laptops, etc. I even went through our old facebook messages and it is nowhere to be found. I am so sad I couldn’t find it, but for now that picture is in my head and it is one of the best memories because it is where it all began 🙂 Brian and I hung out the rest of the night and eventually exchanged numbers. A few days later he texted me and asked If I wanted to go on a date. So stay tuned for next week when I talk all about our first date! <3

Since I couldn’t find the picture here is the oldest picture I could find of us at my formal circa 2011:
